Electing New Officers

Folks,

As was mentioned at the Fall Meeting, Paul and I are stepping down from our posts and letting you nominate candidates for the posts of Chair and Treasurer of the North Central Chapter. For those thinking about throwing their hat into the ring, we thought you'd be interested in what some, if not all, of those duties entail.

Once the two new officers have been selected from an election, that we'll be putting together once nominations have been submitted, Paul and I will, out of the kindness of our hearts, be available to address questions from time to time.

If you think you have what it takes (and it ain't much) to be the next Chair or Treasurer of the North Central Chapter, submit your name to myself and/or Paul. We'll put the list together. Nominations will be accepted now until December 1, 2013.

The Passing of the Torch...

Paul Fell and I have had the honor and pleasure of being Treasurer and Chair of the North Central Chapter for the past 4 years (give or take). After some soul-searching, we both decided that its time to move on and let others take a turn at directing the Chapter. In the coming weeks we will be sending information about nominations and elections for the two offices. We intend to announce new officers by the end of the year.

We each wrote a brief note to the membership. We thank you for being the best damn Chapter in the NCS. You make the North Central what it is.

Mike and I have decided to step aside as NCS N. Central Chapter Chair and Treasurer.

Mike is finishing a term of some 4 years as Chapter Chair. I have served as Treasurer for the same amount of time and was Chapter Chair for about 10 years before that.

Now it’s time to turn over the reins to new leadership. Both of us hope that some of you will step up to the plate and continue to maintain the North Central Chapter at the top of the NCS list when it comes to active, well-organized local chapters.

As you know, we are at a geographical disadvantage over other chapters in more populous areas. However, we seem to always be at the head of the class when it comes to chapter activities, organization, and willingness to pitch in when asked by the NCS Board.

We look forward to a new leadership team and hope that the North Central will continue as the premier local chapter in the National Cartoonists Society.

Paul Fell

As with most non-dictatorial positions, all administrations have a time span to them. The North Central Chapter has never really set one but in good conscience, it occurs to Paul Fell and myself that reason dictates that we would eventually hand the reins over to another chapter chair and treasurer. That time has come. At the Fall 2013 meeting, we announced our intention to call for nominations to elect a new chair and treasurer. The nominations will be open until the end of the year at which time we will select from the nominations your next chair and treasurer who will take over at the beginning of 2014. Their first official duties will take place at the Reuben Judging meeting.

The past four years (or whatever it’s been) have been a very sweet ride for me. I hope it will be for the next chair, as I’m sure Paul hopes it will be for the next treasurer.

My sincere thanks,
Mike Edholm

NCS N. CENTRAL SHOW AND TELL SESSION-SIOUX FALLS

Here’s how this session will work:

1. It’s strictly voluntary, not mandatory.

2. We’d like members to bring samples of new or unusual projects that the rest of us don’t normally associate with what they do.

3. Everyone will sit around in an informal group setting.

4. Presenters will have 5 minutes to talk about their project or feature and pass around a few samples to the rest of the group.

5. We’ll then allow a few minutes for questions from the group and then move on to the next person.

6. Presentations might run longer than 5 minutes if we have a small group of presenters. If we have more than six (6) of you who wish to show and tell, then we are going to really have to stick to that time limit.

7. Bring samples that can be handed around to the group.

8. No Powerpoint or Keynote slide shows, please. If everyone had electronic presentations, it would take up too much time setting up for each person.

PLEASE NOTIFY KEN ALVINE ASAP IF YOU’D LIKE TO BE ONE OF OUR PRESENTERS.

Just a side note: If you have things (books, collectibles, artwork, etc.) that you'd like to donate to the raffle, please bring it/them along.

A Salute to Hägar The Horrible... (for the Fall meeting)

Attention NCS N. Central Chapter Members:

As you know, this is the 40th anniversary of the creation of “Hägar The Horrible”. “Hägar” was he dream child of the great Dik Browne, and capably carried on today by his son, Chris.

Our chapter wanted to do something to honor Chris Browne for all these years of “Hägar”. Our plan is to recognize him for all his work the evening of Saturday, October 5 at our chapter gathering in Sioux Falls.

We propose that each chapter member create a cartoon tribute to “Hägar” and Chris that we could present to him that evening. We need to have each cartoon be no larger than 8 1/2 x 11 so that we could put them together in an album for presentation.

We hope that each of you will create something in your own unique style, either in color or in black and white. Chris and his wife Carroll have gone out of their way to extend outstanding hospitality to our group whenever we’ve met in Sioux Falls and this will be our way of saying, “thank you” and “congratulations”.

If you are unable to make it to our Sioux Falls gathering, please mail your Chris/Hägar cartoon to me at:

Paul Fell
3215 Jamestown Lane
Lincoln, NE 68516

We head for Sioux Falls on Friday, Oct. 4, so cartoons need to arrive in the Thursday mail. If you are coming to Sioux Falls and want to bring the artwork with you, let me know so I won’t be getting all paranoid as the deadline approaches.

FALL CHAPTER MEETING update...

I know that you are waiting patiently for details on our Fall Chapter meeting. The details will be forthcoming, but we have had some technical difficulties, as they say. A kerfuffle with our Okoboji venue has forced us to take Okoboji off the table.

Dave Carpenter and Ken Alvine are scrambling around looking for a suitable location for us. They're doing a terrific job despite the technical difficulties I glossed over.

We should have the information you seek very soon. Keep an eye on the Chapter blog or the Chapter Facebook page. In the meantime, does anybody know any good camp songs.... (That's what they used to use at camp when the children were getting restless.)

We WILL be meeting in October and we're aiming for a date within the first two weeks. Hope that helps a little.
